How To Setup Assessments, Quizzes, and Tests in TalentLMS (TalentLMS Tutorial)

talentlms

Whether you’re training employees, onboarding new team members, or ensuring compliance, having a robust system for testing knowledge is essential. That’s why I love TalentLMS—it provides powerful and flexible testing capabilities that make it easy to evaluate learning outcomes. In this post, (and in even more practical detail in the video linked above and here) I’ll walk you through how to set up quizzes, exams, and other assessments in TalentLMS, ensuring you maximize the platform’s potential.

Getting Started with TalentLMS

Before we dive into assessments, I want to offer you something special - an unlimited free trial of TalentLMS (linked here). Unlike traditional trials that expire after 30, 60, or 90 days, this one lasts indefinitely! You get access to up to five users—whether they’re learners, course creators, or administrators. This allows you to start building courses, designing assessments, and even training a small team for free. Plus, when you use my link, you’ll also get access to my TalentLMS Made Simple online course, which guides you step-by-step through the A to Z TalentLMS setup process so you can start training your employees, contractors, and team members as soon as possible.

Understanding TalentLMS Assessments

TalentLMS is designed for internal training, meaning it’s best suited for organizations looking to train employees, contractors, and team members. If your goal is to sell online courses, I recommend checking out platforms like Kajabi or LearnWorlds (which I also offer free trials and free bonus courses for). However, if you’re focused on internal learning, TalentLMS provides an excellent suite of assessment tools.

Here are the four primary ways to assess learners in TalentLMS:

  1. Tests

  2. Surveys

  3. Assignments

  4. TalentCraft (my personal favorite)

Let’s break them down one by one (I also highly recommend that you watch the video linked above and here to see exactly how to do this in TalentLMS).

Creating Tests in TalentLMS

The test feature is designed for graded exams, quizzes, and assessments. Here’s how you set one up:

  1. Navigate to Courses – Log into TalentLMS and go to the Courses tab.

  2. Select or Create a Course – Either choose an existing course or create a new one.

  3. Add a Test – Click Add, go to Learning Activities, and select Test.

  4. Name Your Test – Give it a clear title like “Onboarding Exam” to stay organized.

  5. Generate or Add Questions:

    • Use AI Question Generation to create multiple-choice, fill-in-the-gap, or free-text questions.

    • Import questions from a question bank to ensure variety.

    • Randomize questions to prevent learners from memorizing answers too easily.

TalentLMS’s AI-powered question generation is a game-changer. Just enter a topic like “Key actions for a new employee in their first week,” specify the number of questions, and let AI generate them for you. You can then fine-tune the questions and set up answer options.

Utilizing the Survey Feature

While tests are graded, surveys are used to collect learner feedback. Surveys can include:

  • Free-text responses

  • Multiple-choice questions

  • Likert scale questions (e.g., “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”)

Surveys are ideal for gathering insights on course effectiveness or understanding employee engagement levels.

Go Beyond Multiple-Choice Questions with Assignments

Sometimes, a multiple-choice quiz isn’t enough. That’s where assignments come in. Assignments allow learners to submit:

  • Text responses

  • File uploads (e.g., PDFs, Word documents)

  • Recorded videos or audio responses

  • Screen-sharing recordings

For example, in an onboarding course, you might require new employees to upload a signed policy document or submit a video introduction.

TalentCraft (the best authoring tool on the market.. and its apart of TalentLMS... and its free with your free trial)

TalentCraft is the most advanced assessment tool within TalentLMS. It allows you to create highly interactive and engaging assessments. Instead of simple question-and-answer formats, you can design:

  • Scenario-based challenges

  • Simulations

  • Branching assessments (where answers determine the next question)

If you want to truly measure real-world application of knowledge, TalentCraft is the way to go.

Leveraging Question Banks and Randomization

For organizations requiring certification exams or compliance training, ensuring fairness and reliability is crucial. TalentLMS helps with this by allowing you to:

  • Use question banks – Every question created is automatically stored and can be reused.

  • Randomize questions – Learners won’t get the same set of questions every time they take an exam.

  • Customize feedback – Offer detailed explanations based on answers to reinforce learning.

Final Thoughts

Assessments are more than just a way to check knowledge; they enhance learning retention, boost engagement, and drive better performance. TalentLMS provides multiple ways to test and reinforce knowledge, whether through graded tests, surveys, assignments, or interactive TalentCraft scenarios.
