How to Transform Your In-Person-Training Into an Online Course? Step by Step
While educators worldwide still compare in person training vs online training in terms of its effectiveness, one thing is clear: online training gives you more versatility, as your learners and trainers can be anywhere.
But how do you take in-person training and turn it into an online course? We have four simple steps that you can follow. You can easily take the training materials you already have to package them into online training.

4 Steps to Transforming Your In-Person Training Into an Online Course
#1. Prioritize the Biggest Challenges of Learners
When comparing in-person vs online training, either type of training requires you to identify the biggest challenges of your learners. Otherwise, they aren’t going to feel motivated to complete the training. But one difference between in-person training vs online training is that it’s absolutely crucial for you to identify a single biggest challenge.
In-person training can take days or hours on end, using part of that time to address multiple challenges your learners have. It also includes time spent on interactions and question-and-answer sessions. Your in-person training can cover multiple topics. But when comparing in-person vs online training, the latter should focus on one topic at a time – the biggest challenge. Once you finish the first bit of training, you can repeat the process with the second-biggest challenge.
#2. Record Your Training
Now, you are ready to record your training. The best way to do this is to run through the training and record it as you do so. You can do this with in-person training or with LIVE virtual training sessions.
With in-person training, you could use any type of camera, including your phone camera. With virtual training, you can record Zoom sessions or use your program of choice.
Whether you are recording in-person training vs online training, you don’t need to include everything in your video. For obvious reasons, you can skip breakout sessions. You likely want to record Q&As, though. When you get in the habit of recording every training session, you can reuse its content for future online trainings.
#3. Break Up the Training Into Microlearning Chunks
You can take your recordings and break them up into smaller pieces. Microlearning involves segments that are up to 10 minutes long. You can even vary their length depending on your material.
The length of your sessions is important because in-person vs online training varies in learner engagement. The way you schedule breaks during in-person training will be very different from how breaks are spread out for online learning.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to use all your in-person training videos in your online training. You have the freedom to omit irrelevant sections or unimportant interactions before dividing them into microlearning segments.
#4. Upload the Training to LMS
Finally, you can upload your microlearning online course to your platform of choice. This can be an LMS or as simple as YouTube or Loom. Remember that YouTube lets you set up a private playlist that requires a link to access. We suggest using Talent Cards or Talent LMS as your system for employee training.
