LearnWorlds Assessments: Set Up Quizzes, Exams & Self-Assessments Fast (Step-by-step)
As someone who’s built and launched dozens of successful online courses, I know firsthand how essential assessments are to your learners’ success—and to your own. Whether you’re selling a coaching program, building an evergreen funnel for your flagship course, or onboarding new clients with a SCORM-based curriculum, assessments help you do more than just check for understanding. They deepen engagement, personalize the learning journey, and (if done right) turn casual browsers into paying students.
In this post (and in the YouTube video embedded above and linked here) , I’ll walk you through exactly how to set up quizzes, exams, and self-assessments in LearnWorlds (grab your free trial and bonuses here) step by step. I’ll also show you how to use LearnWorlds’ built-in AI Assistant to create assessments faster, customize your settings to match your goals, and create automated tags that trigger next steps in your learner journey. If you're using LearnWorlds—or even considering it—this guide is going to save you hours.
Why Use LearnWorlds for Exams and Self-Assessments?
LearnWorlds shines as an externally-facing learning management system, which means it's ideal for course creators who want to sell their content. It’s packed with features that let you build learning experiences that feel premium and intentional, especially when it comes to exams and quizzes.
One of the most powerful aspects of LearnWorlds is how flexible its assessment tools are. You can build exams, assignments, self-assessments, and even integrate SCORM packages. But what really sets it apart is the ability to create smart automations and customize how learners interact with each question—something that’s often lacking in platforms like Kajabi. With LearnWorlds, your assessments aren’t just measuring—they’re helping you guide the learning experience.
Step 1: Creating Your First Exam in LearnWorlds
When you open a course in LearnWorlds, you’ll head to the “Courses” section and select the course where you want to add an exam or quiz. I used one of my demo courses—Breathing Techniques for Ultra Runners with Asthma—to show this process in real time in the video embedded above (and linked here). (Yes, I’m an ultra runner with asthma—and I’ve got a whole brand built around helping athletes with asthma reach their full potential.)
Once inside the course, go to the appropriate section (LearnWorlds calls these “Sections,” but I call them “Milestones”) and click “Add Activity.” This is where you’ll find options for Exams and Self-Assessments. Choosing "Exam" gives you the option to start from scratch or upload a SCORM package created in tools like Articulate or Adobe Captivate. You can create multiple-choice questions, open-ended assignments, or anything in between—and you can structure your exam into sections just like your course.
Step 2: Let the AI Assistant Do the Heavy Lifting
Here’s where things get fun—and fast. LearnWorlds includes an AI Assistant that can help you generate exam questions in seconds. You choose the number of questions, the number of answer choices, the tone (yes, even humorous!), the difficulty level, and the topic.
For my demo, I asked the AI to create four multiple-choice questions about breathing techniques for ultra runners with asthma. I selected a difficult level and a humorous tone—and the AI delivered questions that were both accurate and fun. Of course, you can always edit the questions and answers, but starting with AI-generated content saves a ton of time.
And don’t overlook the feedback options. The AI Assistant generates both correct and incorrect feedback for each question, which you can personalize to give more detailed responses. This alone can increase learner retention and make the quiz feel more interactive and supportive.
Step 3: Customizing Exam Settings Like a Pro
After your questions are set, the customization begins. You can control everything from scoring to how many attempts learners get. Want to give partial credit for attempting a question even if it's wrong? You can do that. Want to randomize questions so each learner has a unique experience? That’s built in too.
I love how granular the settings are. You can shuffle questions, create different feedback experiences, set timers for individual questions or the whole exam, and even tag learners based on how they respond. These tags are powerful. For example, if someone answers a question incorrectly about a key concept, you can trigger an email that sends them a resource or offers a coaching session.
This level of automation is what separates good course experiences from great ones. You're not just delivering content—you're building an intelligent ecosystem around your learners.
Step 4: Understanding the Difference Between Exams and Self-Assessments
So what’s the difference between an exam and a self-assessment in LearnWorlds? It’s all about intent.
Exams are built to evaluate what a learner knows. They're often graded and can be used to certify progress or completion. Self-assessments, on the other hand, are about reflection and insight. These are ideal when you want to understand how your learners are applying knowledge in real life—or when you want to offer them a channel for feedback.
In my course on breathing techniques, a self-assessment might ask runners to reflect on which techniques they’ve tried and how well they worked. This is a way for them to share their experience and ask for advice—without the pressure of being graded. LearnWorlds lets you create both exam-style and form-style questions within self-assessments, including uploads, text responses, audio or video recordings, and even contact forms.
Step 5: Tags, Feedback, and What Happens Next
Tags in LearnWorlds are more than just labels—they’re automation triggers. Once a learner completes an assessment, you can apply specific tags based on their answers. These tags can be used to enroll them in another course, trigger an email campaign in Kajabi, or simply segment them for future follow-up.
One of my favorite tricks is combining this with feedback automation. Let’s say someone scores high on your quiz—you tag them as "advanced" and automatically send them a bonus module or advanced content. On the flip side, if they struggle, you send them foundational material or invite them to a live Q&A session. This approach personalizes the learner journey and makes your course feel alive and adaptive.
Step 6: Bonus—Why I Still Use Kajabi (and When I Don’t)
I run both of my businesses—eLearning Partners and Athlete with Asthma—on Kajabi (grab your free trial and bonuses here). It’s a phenomenal tool for content marketing, email automation, and building a unified course site. That said, Kajabi lacks the assessment depth and SCORM support that LearnWorlds offers.
If your course doesn’t rely on SCORM content and your assessments are relatively straightforward, Kajabi might still work for you. But if you want robust quizzes, conditional logic, smart tagging, randomized questions, and deep learner analytics, LearnWorlds gives you more power and flexibility. I personally use both platforms for different purposes and recommend grabbing the free trial of each to see which fits your workflow.
Final Thoughts (and Your Free Trial + Bonus Course)
LearnWorlds gives you everything you need to create powerful, customizable assessments that match your course goals—whether that’s selling a certification program, coaching high-level clients, or helping runners with asthma breathe more efficiently. It’s fast, intuitive, and surprisingly fun to use—especially when you let the AI Assistant jumpstart your quiz creation process.
